When sticky notes just aren't cutting the mustard

Is your to-do list captured on sticky notes stuck to your PC monitor, noticeboard, fridge, dog and occasionally, for the really important ones, forehead? (And let’s not forget all those that have fallen down the back of your desk once the sticky became unstuck.)

Maybe you have different notebooks for different parts of your life, and your to-do lists are very well organised but in two or three different places?

Not having easy-to-see clarity around everything that needs to be done can equal overwhelm all too quickly. Quite often it’s not the volume of tasks that causes those feelings of stress; it’s the not knowing. That feeling in the back of your mind that there’s a task lurking somewhere, forgotten and waiting to pounce at the eleventh hour. I used to feel that way all the time, so I know how debilitating it can be.

So this week I’d like to talk to you about bullet journals and how they can save you from drowning in a sea of small yellow squares.

There's too much to cover in one post, so this is the first in a three-part series introducing you to the joys of the bullet journal!

You may have heard of bullet journaling as it’s taken off in a big way over the last eighteen months or so. If you HAVE heard of it, chances are that your head has been turned by all the images on the interwebs of people’s beautifully designed journals, complete with perfect calligraphy and colour coding (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, after you’ve read this post go to Pinterest and search for ‘bullet journal’).

Now I adore stationery as much as the next Paperchase addict, and have nothing against beautiful design, colouring pencils and gorgeous lettering. If that’s your bag, go for it.

But I’m going to stick my neck out and say that for most of us, having such an aesthetically pleasing to-do list isn’t actually going to help us get our shizzle done. If anything, it’s going to slow us down.

My bullet journal is scruffy, but it works for me.

The genius of the bullet journal is that it allows you to keep everything in one place. All you need is a notebook and something to write with.

So be gone, sticky notes that lose their sticky! Farewell, getting to the supermarket only to find that your shopping list is stuck on the fridge!

Your bullet journal can give you back control when you don’t know which way is up.

In tomorrow’s post, I’ll tell you how…
